On 15 October 2023, the YMCA Penang Youth and Sports Committee, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Singapore East and the Rotary Club of Penang, organized a meaningful workshop for underprivileged children under the care of the Penang Children Protection Society.
The initiative, called The Meaningful Work, focused on cultivating essential life skills in children through hands-on learning experiences. From financial planning to creative expression, the program equipped participants with tools to grow into resilient and well-rounded individuals.
Building Financial and Strategic Skills
One of the highlights of the workshop was a grocery shopping activity, designed to teach financial planning, delegation, and decision-making. The children learned how to manage money, make strategic choices, and work together — skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
Creative and Emotional Development
Beyond financial literacy, the children also explored Pastel Nagomi Art, a gentle and therapeutic art form from Japan. This activity encouraged self-expression, helped participants find inner peace, and provided them with a creative outlet to cope with stress in their daily lives.
Lasting Impact
The project was developed in response to the community’s growing need for financial stability and psychological resilience, particularly among disadvantaged youth. By equipping children with practical skills, confidence, and coping mechanisms, The Meaningful Work ensures that they will be better prepared to face future challenges and contribute positively to society.
