On 5 January 2024, the Rotary Club of Penang joined hands with Yayasan Kelab-Kelab Rotary Malaysia to bring smiles to young faces through the Bag2School Project. With a contribution of USD 640, 120 brand-new school bags were provided to children from the B40 economic group — the lowest-income families in Malaysia — who attend Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Azad in Penang.
A Simple Gift with a Big Impact
For many of these families, basic school essentials such as bags and uniforms are often passed down from sibling to sibling, sometimes in worn or torn condition. By receiving new school bags, the children not only gained a practical tool for carrying their textbooks and assessment books, but also a renewed sense of pride and dignity in their education.
Beyond the Classroom
This initiative goes beyond meeting immediate needs. When children are properly equipped for school, they are more motivated to attend, learn, and take care of their belongings. Parents, too, feel relief knowing that one essential expense is lifted from their already stretched household budgets. Over time, such support strengthens children’s confidence, reduces dropout rates, and empowers them to pursue better futures through education.

✨ The Bag2School Project shows us that sometimes the simplest gestures — like giving a child a school bag — can carry the greatest weight. Each bag holds not just books, but dreams, dignity, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.
