For many, Chinese New Year is a time of joy, reunion, and celebration. But for hundreds of underprivileged senior citizens in Penang, it can also be a season of loneliness and struggle. To bring warmth and dignity to their celebrations, the Rotary Club of Penang has for years organized the CNY Annual Charity Programme, a much-anticipated event that brings together fellowship, food, and festive spirit.
Adapting Tradition in Difficult Times
In 2021, the event faced an unusual challenge — the COVID-19 pandemic. Large gatherings were not possible, yet the Club remained determined to continue this tradition of service. Instead of the usual 9-course vegetarian banquet, complete with soup, dessert, and entertainment, food was lovingly packed into takeaway boxes and distributed to 200 registered senior citizens. Each recipient also received a traditional ang pow, filled with RM10, as a token of prosperity and care.
The Chief Minister of Penang, YB Chow Kon Yeow, graced the occasion, underscoring the importance of community solidarity during such challenging times.
Partners in Compassion
This year’s programme was held at the alley behind 23 & 25 Lebuh Klang, Georgetown, in collaboration with local NGOs KAWAN and the Majlis Pengurusan Komuniti Kampung Chulia Street. Only five Rotarians were allowed to attend physically due to SOP restrictions, but the spirit of service was as strong as ever.
Beyond a Meal
For many senior citizens, this event represents more than food or financial aid. Most of them live on small government allowances of RM300–450, often alone, abandoned, or without family support. A simple meal, a festive ang pow, and the knowledge that they are remembered can bring smiles, laughter, and dignity to their lives.

Date: 27 February 2021
